An Alibi

That morning of 10 March 2018
we arrived at the Yanacocha Tract,
worked the lower flowering ground
near the baños, then set off
up the old Inca road
angling the mountainside
with an exquisite pluperfect grade.
Up and around, two hours
at an easy pace. Then
the easterly overlook, the Prow.
We sat there with the woodstars,
the sapphirewings, the velvetbreasts . . .
till the sun went down.
